Watership Down is the compelling tale of a group of wild rabbits struggling to hold onto their place in the world--now a Emmy Award-winning Netflix animated miniseries starring James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult, and Oscar and Grammy award-winning Sir Ben Kingsley.

A phenomenal worldwide bestseller for more than forty years, Richard Adams's Watership Down is a timeless classic and one of the most beloved novels of all time. Set in England's Downs, a once idyllic rural landscape, this stirring tale of adventure, courage and survival follows a band of very special creatures on their flight from the intrusion of man and the certain destruction of their home. Led by a stouthearted pair of brothers, they journey forth from their native Sandleford Warren through the harrowing trials posed by predators and adversaries, to a mysterious promised land and a more perfect society.

Reminded me of Clockwork Orange with rabbits. Took 42 years to read in two weeks.

Simply put, this is my favorite book of all time. I first read it in elementary school (although I don't recommend it for most young children due to the themes, violence, and vocabulary level) and have re-read it many times since. Depending on what stage of life I'm in, I get something new and different out of it each time. On the surface, it's some rabbits going on an adventure. As I've matured and broadened my horizons, I've uncovered a wealth of other threads running through the book: bravery, community, leadership, starting over, recovering, mourning, utopia and dystopia, resisting fascism, war, peace, aging, family, hope, and more. And that's the beauty of Watership Down: you can read it on so many levels. The characters (expecially Hazel, Fiver, and Bigwig) are like old friends I never tire of revisiting, and Woundwort is one of the most intimidating villains I've encountered. Watership Down is a true epic, and writing this review reminds me that I'm overdue to dig out my much-loved, underlined, dog-eared paperback copy and re-(re-re-re-re-re-re)read it again.

General Woundwart: Epic and terrifying. So glad my pet rabbits have never taken after him.

I enjoyed this book.
There are a lot of characters sometimes to many to remember.
The pacing in some parts isn't the greatest but overall its a good book.

I read this for the "An Allegorical Book" part of my 2019 reading challenge. I really enjoyed it, the rabbits have great personalities and it reminds me a lot of Duncton Wood.

Possibly one of the greatest books ever written. I listened to the audiobook first, the narrator really brought the whole world to life. A magical work that brings you into the world of rabbits with their myth and politics. Amazing story telling and adventure, I found myself very invested in their quest. Should be read by everyone before they die.
