One of the things I really wish they had not done in the movie was to interrupt the Kaddish, the Hebrew Prayer for the dead.
When Harvey Fierstein goes over to the gravesite of his lover and begins the prayer, I started praying it along with him, but I wasn't joining a character in a video, I was praying for a lover of mine who had died of AIDS the year before, and was sitting next to a man who was going to die of AIDS within two months.
When Harvey's Mother interrupts Harvey, she interrupts me. I didn't take it well. I started screaming. I got hysterical. Fortunately I had a Gentile man sitting next to me and had to explain why this was so upsetting. He was already kind of freaked out that I began the prayer in lockstep with Harvey as to him it was a meaningless collection of syllables, and when it was interrupted my reaction was a puzzle to him, but he was able to calm me down and we went on.
I really, seriously and truly wish that Harvey had been allowed to finish the prayer (it takes a minute and a half) and then his mother had started her attack.
What Harvey has accidently said is that he feels so alone that he can't conceive of a situation where people in the audience would wish to join him in prayer for their dead loved ones when he begins to do so.

A beautiful story, this epic movie (yes, I think it is epic), has the potential to influence people about homosexuality in such a positive way. A story about love and loss, one we can all relate to in some way, the main character's torch songs are for the two loves of his life and the relationship he has with his mother. An amazing story, well acted and well told.
