Yeah, it's just fine, but it is only a slight progression from Menzel's first big movie, "Closely Watched Trains", made...what?..over 40 YEARS ago. Like that one, we have a Czech Everyman caught up in the crunch of Czech history. And like that one, the tone is satirical with snatches of dyspeptic philosophy. One major annoyance (still) is his treatment of women, which hasn't progressed during those 40 years past the "giggling, jiggling bunny" variety. What has clearly improved however, is the cinematography and art direction, which is at points absolutely breathtaking. Watch both these Menzel movies back-to-back and you decide how far he's come.

A surprising gem of a Czech movie, black but very humorous comedy at its best, very well plotted, well scripted, and superbly acted and photographed.

The story concerns the rise, fall and ultimate redemption of an ambitious young man, a waiter, whose only ambition is to become filthy rich and own his own luxurious hotel. His character, though amoral, is a imminently likeable scamp. (It also has some serious moments of introspective judgment.)

Superb!

This sexual film kept me interest from start to finish. At first, I wasn't sure that I would enjoy it but the story-telling of one man's pursuit of money and a dream before, during and after the second World War was interesting.

Aa series of picaresque erotic advantures that promise more than they yield. Fun, but not profound film-making.
