I was surprised to see so many negative reviews on here. I have to say this really was a movie which told a story (shocking in this day an age) as opposed to most modern movies that use the format to simply dangle sex, explosions and cheap thrills in front of a slack jawed audience. I don't understand why so many people consider this movie to be slow-paced, as the entire time I was enthralled by the characters' emotions, interactions, and what was an obvious well developed lead up to a shocking and horrible climax. This movie took the time to actually develop the characters.

Your reaction might hinge on your appetite for violence, or lack thereof.
Director's other work features strong violence as well.
But this has been called a 'cult' favorite; and critically well received (NYT Critic's Pick).
The violence is wrapped in more aesthetically acceptable qualities. This could be consequent to Kurt Russel's involvement. Witty dialogue, if you don't get tired of it, and an emphasis on character.
In that character aspect, it is credible a director would take a shot at 'The Searchers' while at the same time being sure to include the requisite gore.
I'm sounding like I feel superior. This has been declared by many an artistic success. Commercially: Budget:$1,800,000 (estimated)
Cumulative Worldwide Gross: $382,579.
Some will call it entertaining, providing a vicarious experience that they value.
I feel like I'm looking for something else from a movie.

Recent addition to my list of favorite westerns. It's not for everyone: sort of a mix of "The Searchers" with some truly grisly horror elements added in, although most of the violence happens quickly. That sounds like a negative, but it isn't. Although this film is truly frightening in places, it also offers good measures of suspense and a few welcome moments of humor, mostly provided by the great Richard Jenkins ("The Shape of Water," "Cabin in the Woods"). Much of the film seems slow paced, but when things start to happen in the third act, it shifts into a much faster pace. If horror movies aren't your thing, you might want to pass, but you'll be missing out on a western that's unlike anything this reviewer had ever seen before.

A horror survival western. There's three genres I never thought to put together. But somehow, it works.

Much better than I expected.
I hate most movies, but this turned out worthwhile. I'll probably watch it again.
Managed to surprise me the whole way through, start to finish, without being needlessly confusing.
It's pretty bloody, but no worse than a typical zombie movie.
Extremely thoughtful dialogue & characters that I actually care about...That's unusual!
Most importantly, it's funny...Subtle humor that some won't get, but it's there.

Wow, this is a strange movie. Much of the film is a classic western tale about endurance and responsibility. But the villains are semi-supernatural. And there’s some very harsh violence. But there’s also some gentle humor. But it's also a horror movie at times. And most unusually for a modern Hollywood movie, the characters have personalities and it’s fun to watch them interact even when not much is happening. Though most are not big stars, Bone Tomahawk also benefits from a terrific cast. I will watch just about anything Kurt Russell is in, and Richard Jenkins is always good. The best part of the movie is the opening scene in which they have a long conversation about soup. I’d happily watch a whole movie version of just that scene.

I really had high expectations for this movie; it appeared that there was finally a horror movie using the Wild West as a backdrop and it appeared to have a relatively solid cast led by Kurt Russell but personally that's all it had to offer for me. A large portion of the movie involves the heroes leisurely riding to the cannibals hideout and while they could have used this runtime to build decent atmosphere or suspense, they instead decided to Tarantino the script and have the cast just speak do and face things that have nothing to do with the main plot until the last 20 or so minutes where they fight and escape the cannibals who, surprisingly didn't offend me (I'm part cree from my mothers side) but rather disappointed me as there were many real cannibalistic tribes like the Anasazi and Mexicas who would have been far more horrifying than these bland losers. Overall if you want to see this done better, watch something like The Hills Have Eyes or no country for old men or even better yet; pick up a book and read Blood Meriden by Cormac Macarthy.

We started it and ended up pushing forward to see what happens. A bit slow for us not much of a plot. Ending was gruesome and graphic. I would also call it a low budget movie.

Good acting, interesting dialogue, sense of dread and ever-present danger can't overcome script that runs at least 15 minutes too long

A treat, if you like good dialogue and gore dished up by cave-dwelling cannibals. Zahler knows how to deliver a satisfying movie.

"Say goodbye to my wife. I'll say hello to yours." ... says Sheriff Franklin Hunt (Kurt Russell) to Chicory (Richard Jenkins).

Here are some already in IMDb:
Sheriff Franklin Hunt: Say goodbye to my wife. I'll say hello to yours.
John Brooder: Smart men don't get married.
Chicory: You know, I know the world's supposed to be round, but I'm not so sure about this part.
Sheriff Franklin Hunt: Pain is how your body talks to you. You'd do well to listen to it.
Buddy: This is not the time for womanly imaginings.

The worst movie ever made by Hollywood. Shame on Kurt Russell and other actors to participate in this gory fiction movie. Children should not watch this brainless movie.
