It's the Roaring Twenties and Prohibition hasn't stopped the flow of booze in an underground network of gangster-run speakeasies. The opportunity to gain power and money is there for any man with enough nerve, and Joe Coughlin, the son of the Boston Police superintendent, long ago turned his back on his strict upbringing for the spoils of being an outlaw. But even among criminals there are rules, and Joe breaks a big one: crossing a powerful mob boss by stealing his money and his moll.

I liked this movie about So. Florida in the 1930s. Not a great drama but decent w. gangster action.

In a bizarre world where a hardcore criminal has a a heart of gold.
Where bad deeds get rewarded AND punished.
In that context, an enjoyable action thriller with heartbreak and romance.
A few visually gorgeous scenes.

Aimless and overlong -- a description which could apply equally to Live By Night or Ben Affleck's career. Ben is ambitious, but the roles of writer, director, producer and star are beyond him separately, let alone together. If you're his true fan, yes, see it. But there are so many other, better films to watch, for example The Road to Perdition or The Godfather, or the noir films that inspired him, like Kiss of Death (1947) or Crisscross (1949).

No matter how hard he tries, Ben Affleck can't look like or act a gangster. He looks like a CPA no matter how hard he tries to be baddish. The movie is over 2 hours long. I guess it could have been 3 days long if they wanted to keep the story going but shoulda clipped it off at 100 minutes.

A box office dud on the scale of GIGLI, LIVE BY NIGHT once again proves Ben Affleck's star power is overrated. He wrote the screenplay; he directed the film; and he helped produce it. He never should have cast himself in the lead role. He's too old. Most of the movie he seems stoned from whatever diet pills he's on. But beyond the glaring error of his casting of himself looms the question, Why another Prohibition Era gangster picture? Why? We have seen all these characters before, and done much better. Nothing is new here.

Entertaining action movie with lots of violence and subsequent sadness. Decent flick.

When you are preoccupied with making your character stand out, you give them white suits and make them taller than everyone else. Sorry, but this is not one of Affleck's better movies and I'm longing for the days of The Town.

I kind of hate it when people say "meh" in dialogue, but when it's said as their own response to something .... okay, I get it. In the case of Live By Night, my opinion is ..... meh. As a period piece it looks great. There are actors I recognize and like, but something about the story delivery just felt ..... well, 'forced' is too strong a word ...... 'staged' perhaps? It felt as though (maybe) 1/2 the actors weren't totally committed to the film or their roles, that something wasn't completely in sync -- kind of like when you see someone who is predominantly a stage actor and they're in a film. I got the impression that someone said "Hey, wouldn't it be GREAT to see Ben Affleck in 1920s clothing & period spelunking the ranks of mobsters!!!" but then come to find that it isn't a fit .... which is all well fine until you learn that Affleck was the writer, director, co-producer, and star in Live By Night. So if in truth it was all a bad idea, maybe squarely who's shoulders does that rest on .... hmmm? I think you're better off watching Road to Perdition with Tom Hanks, Paul Newman, Jude Law, and Daniel Craig. Except that in Live By Night you get to see Zoe Saldana >;)

Why oh why did not listen to the audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes and steer clear of this? The overall plot was of some interest. However, it was befallen by two things, and they both fall under arrogance by the film-makers. The film is unnecessarily long, much of it caused by long, drawn out shots that are usually somewhat beautiful, but are incredibly boring and even irritating when found in the middle of what should have been a taught mob film. The second is the film-makers' desperate attempt to add dialogue to address racism and xenophobia. At least two different times if felt like one of the mob bosses - obviously deplorably human beings - lectures another corrupt and evil person on their hope that racism and xenophobia will one day cause them to receive their comeuppance. The came across to me as what could have been an 80 minutes taught mob thriller, with nearly 50 minutes of lingering cinematography and campaign speeches. It really ruined the movie. If the movie was, at its heart, about the racial tensions between the Italian and Cuban criminals and the KKK, or even between the Irish who worked with the Italian mobsters - that could have potentially been a compelling movie - but the heart of the movie was about a man who was perhaps too good to be a mob boss, and whether raising up in the ranks would ruin his character - with campaign speeches that seemed to come out of nowhere added to it. The director (Ben Affleck) did not have the cruelty as a director to choose which movie they were making, and cut the other parts of it out. As a result, we have a jumbled mess that failed at telling either story.

In 1917, I signed up to fight the Huns in France. Good men died all around me. And I saw no reason for it. The rules we lived by were lies. and they didn't apply to those who made them. I swore If I made it home, I would never follow orders again. I left a soldier. I came home an outlaw. I lived one robbery to the next. A good day was filled by sleep... and a good night spent running too hard to look back.
I lived that life for 10 years. Until it caught up to me It all started with an inside man.
But we were in love and we were stupid.. And every time he was out of town, we were together. The fit was perfect.
I'm on about you being the type of lassie who consorts with criminals. The fact that the criminal is my son isn't the issue. It is that my son is still my son. and I have feelings that cause me to question the wisdom of consorting with the type of woman.. who knowingly consorts with criminals.

But how will you hold the power once you have it?
-You don't think I'm strong enough?
I don't know if you're cruel enough. And if you are, that would be very sad.
-Powerful men don't have to be cruel.
But they usually are. Tell me something, do you think there is such a thing as an noble man?
-I have nothing against an noble man. They just really look past Forty.
My father died for Cuba. My mother died of a broken heart. He would often tell us "You can not truly live unless there is something for which you would die."
The local sheriff wanted to see us. Apparently he was a custom down there to talk about how you really break the law... before you did it.
-What kind of guy is the chief?
He is a cop, so he is an asshole. Other than that, he's okay.
I never agreed with the Spanish that the lighter rums were superior. Of course, we Cubans went along
because of our obsession.. lighter is greater in all things..

He is in the klan.
-So what? So are the five million other guys in this country.
The klan has a lot of fxcking Juice.
-They're immigrants with 4th graded education.
Oh. They're gonna love you. A Catholic who works with coloreds and lives with Cuban.
The Italians and the Cubans keep to themselves. But the Cubans, they hate the Spaniards. And the Spaniards look at all Cubans like they're uppity Coons... who forgot their place since America freed them in '98. The Cubans and the Spanish, they look down on the Puerto Ricans... and everyone, I mean everyone, shxts on the Dominicans.
I've been a police officer for 37 years and I've learned one thing above all. Do you know what it is?
-It's going to be another yarn from the old country?
No. What you put out in the world will always come back to you. But never how you predict.
I'm sure it doesn't.
Unearned confidence of that about which one is ignorant, always has the brightest glow.

If you're going to kill him be man enough to pull the trigger. Ain't no pride in having other people do what you're too weak to do yourself.
-In my experience doesn't take much to pull the trigger.
You know what happens if you don't help me.
-No, I don't know.
More bodies are gonna pile up. More articles like "Cigar City" slaughter are gonna get written. And the chief gonna get pushed out. You too.
The difference is when you get pushed out... Someone does it with a bullet to the back of your ear.
How did he get the name Digger?
- Because he's a fxcking dummy. All they let him do is dig ditches for the bodies.
How many things, good or bad, come to us whether we ask for them or not?

Now everything I do, every step I take, Is about You and Me and protecting our future. And that's what you need to understand.
-But if those steps make you, little by little someone else... then you will not be you anymore. You are you, except for all those bad things you did. You're almost you. I want the real you.
One hears much...of personal liberty. But when you've seen the barbarity of man... and been treated to personal dosages... You see..It is simply the liberty for gambler. For the gambler to fritter away the gifts of God... By using it for himself.
- Amen.
Personal liberty is the liberty... of a Murderer. A seducer. A wolf who wants to remain in a sheepfold. I ask you... How cheap is your virtue?
I don't know much about honest work, I gotta tell you.
-Well, who said anything about honest work?

More booze has been drunk in the last ten years, than ever before. People don't wanna be told that they can't do it. The same could be said for fornication. People want it, but don't wanna be told they can't have it. No why should they?
-I'm sorry?
If people want to fornicate, I see no reason to stop them.
-And if they wish to lie down with animals?
Do they?
-I'm Sorry?
The people wish to lie down with animals?
-Some do. And their sickness will spread if you have your way.
Forgive me. I see no co-relation between alcohol and lying down with animals.
-There is a co-relation across all sin. It's all against the wishes of God, therefore all equally offensive...If God rewrites the Bible to cast gambling as virtuous... I will refrain from speaking against it. But until then we don't get to pick our sins, Mr. Coughlin.

-People I work for are gonna be very upset about this.
We aren't men to be muscled or coned. We are an institution. We can't be bribed or bullied... because I simply represent the vested interest of a board of governors. We are the landed white,
gentry in this country... and we have no plans to curve off a strip of this country... which we have gone to great pains to break and colonize... and hand it over to Catholics, Jews, darkies or Diegos.
-It's just bigger, better racket. That's all. Keeping money in your hands and out of the hands of people like us. All those people... the negro, on whose back you went to great pains to break this country... and the immigrants who came over here with nothing... and worked their fingers to the fxcking... I believed when you told them they could get ahead. And one day, I may not live to see it. They're gonna figure it out. But I tell you what, I would hate to fxcking be you. Standing between those people and what they deserve.

When the time comes, he will tell me where you are, and I'll come get you.
-So you can find out if you are as cruel as you need to be?
I guess so.
-Joseph. Even if you win today's battle, there is so much violence in what you do.
There has never been anyone like you in my life. One day I'm going to be good enough for you.
What's your father gonna do?
-Sitting in his chair, I guess. Blind with rage that men touched his daughter, the way he used to touch his wife. And worse. He goes around the house whispering one word over and over.
What word?
-Repent. Repent, repent.
You know what I learned... since I have been trusting my soul out to God?
This is heaven... Right Here. We are in it now.
-And how come it looks like hell?
Because we fxcked it all up.

May 12, 2017

"Where is heaven in the sky?" I told him what Loretta told to me. This is heaven right here. We are in it now.
You know we are not God's children. We are not fairy tale people in a true love book. We dance like motherfxckers so the grass can't grow under foot.
I don't suppose you can wait for him to die of blood poisoning.
-I don't think we got that kind of time.
It's a hard thing for a man... to have a son this stupid.
You need to trust the people you work with. We don't get into this game to play second. To back the rumble horse.
And there is no power in being crew-boss to shake it down long shoreman.
-You ever think maybe that's the point, smart-guy.
