One mistake, one fateful night, and Tess DeMello's life is changed forever. It is 1944. Pregnant, alone, and riddled with guilt, twenty-three-year-old Tess DeMello abruptly gives up her budding career as a nurse and ends her engagement to the love of her life, unable to live a lie. Instead, she turns to the baby's father for help and agrees to marry him, moving to the small, rural town of Hickory, North Carolina. Tess's new husband, Henry Kraft, is a secretive man who often stays out all night, hides money from his new wife, and shows her no affection. Tess quickly realizes she's trapped in a strange and loveless marriage with no way out.The people of Hickory love and respect Henry but see Tess as an outsider, treating her with suspicion and disdain. When one of the town's golden girls dies in a terrible accident, everyone holds Tess responsible. But Henry keeps his secrets even closer now, though it seems that everyone knows something about him that Tess does not. When a sudden polio epidemic strikes Hickory, the townspeople band together to build a polio hospital. Tess knows she is needed and defies Henry's wishes to begin working at there. Through this work, she begins to find purpose and meaning. Yet at home, Henry's actions grow more alarming by the day. As Tess works to save the lives of her patients, can she untangle the truth behind her husband's mysterious behavior and find the love— and the life—she was meant to have? Steeped in history and filled with heart-wrenching twists, The Stolen Marriage is an emotionally captivating novel of secrets, betrayals, prejudice, and forgiveness. It showcases Diane Chamberlain at the top of her talent.

A quick and interesting read based on true events, where the most interesting developments happen at the end only. Solid novel, but nothing more than that.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It helped me understand how bad the polio epidemic was before the discovery of the vaccine. Although it’s only a part of the story it also helped me understand the separation of the races in the 1940’s and how people had to adapt and go about their lives in a different way than we do today.

I read "The Dream Daughter" and couldn't put it down. Started this one and couldn't put it I have all her books on my queue! They are just good, readable stories...nothing rocket-science cerebral, just good reads!

I just finished this book & it is still "with" me -- I really liked it. Set in the early 1940's, a young engaged girl gets intoxicated one night and the resulting consequences lead to so many changes. There are mysteries involved, love affairs and lots of drama. This is a historical fiction about the polio epidemic in North Carolina.

Definitely a 5 star story!
I've read a lot of Diane Chamberlain's books and really enjoyed them all, this one rates right up at the top! A story with so many different facets to it and it kept me interested right to the end. After so many adversities along the way, it was very satisfying to have a happy ending.

I am so grateful to great authors like Diane Chamberlain for the hours they transport me away from whatever pain, crises, or just plain overload is going on in my life - and, at the same time teach me about history, cultures, etc., and inspire me as their characters learn and grow!
The description of this title had me putting it off until it was the last book on my "for later" shelf, but the story was so much deeper and more complicated than I expected from a "marriage for convenience" story. Yes, there were hints throughout about the way(s) the story would wrap up, but even they wouldn't have led me to guess why some things happened the way they did, or how they would work out.

Couldn't put this book it in 2 days. Fascinating story about a time in history that I knew nothing about. Love this author.
