Ever since her near-fatal drowning, Cassidy has been able to pull back the "Veil" that separates the living from the dead and see ghosts, not that she wants to, and she was really looking forward to a ghost-free summer at the beach; however her parents are going to start filming a TV series about the world's most haunted places, starting with Edinburgh with its graveyards, castles, and restless phantoms--and Cass and her personal ghost companion, Jacob, are about to find out that a city of old ghosts can be a very dangerous place indeed.

Cassidy almost drowns and can see ghosts after she was rescued by a ghost named Jacob. The two of them go with her parents to Scotland to films a ghost hunter show and Cassidy finds out that some ghosts can be very dangerous. Cassidy and Jacob have to fight to save herself and also rid the country of a ghost that should not be there.

This was my first Victoria Schwab book and definitely not my last. If you love haunted cemetery books, you'll devour this in one day. This is the perfect ghost story to read as the weather turns chilly and the nights get longer. I can't wait for the next in the series.

A creepy ghost story that's sure to be a hit with fans of Mary Downing Hahn!

Equal parts spooky, atmospheric ghost story and love letter to Edinburgh and Harry Potter.

I enjoy all her books, and this combines my love of those and YA novels. Excited for the next book!

A Great Books for Great Kids pick for grades 7-8.

In the book, City of Ghosts, readers can grow to have a different perspective on paranormal activity and have a good laugh with teen Cassidy and her ghost best friend Jacob on their adventure in Scotland.

Cassidy is a girl who can somehow go through the realm of the afterlife once her life was saved by a ghost named Jacob. Her parents, ironically, are writers/ghost historians who are beginning to host their own T.V show, making Scotland their first location. Which Cassidy will then have to discover what her abilities are really capable of.

I liked that the book had a different perspective in a supernatural world, where there is more going on in the afterlife. The friendship of Cassidy and Jacob is a humorous one that can keep a reader interested. Along with Cassidy going through a journey of discovering her capabilities.

Victoria Schwab, the author, keeps things not over the top where things are complicated but has the plot in what you would expect in a teenager’s life. She has the setting of the story in the 21st century which will engage the reader better with its modern time as well.

Most teens can enjoy reading this book because it is something out of the ordinary and the humour in it. They’ll like the curiosity of Cassidy as she tries to understand the point of her ability and the drama that brings her when coming to terms with ghosts. This is recommended for teens from around age 12 to 17. by a teen in Surrey Libraries.
