Percy Jackson is about to be kicked out of boarding school...again. And that's the least of his troubles. Lately, mythological monsters and the gods of Mount Olympus seem to be walking straight out of the pages of Percy's Greek mythology textbook and into his life. And worse, he's angered a few of them. Zeus's master lightning bolt has been stolen, and Percy is the prime suspect. Now Percy and his friends have just ten days to find and return Zeus's stolen property and bring peace to a warring Mount Olympus. But to succeed on his quest, Percy will have to do more than catch the true thief: he must comes to terms with the father who abandoned him; solve the riddle of the Oracle, which warns him of betrayal by a friend; and unravel a treachery more powerful than the gods themselves.

Percy Jackson is a seemingly normal 12-year-old child with ADHD and dyslexia, but he is plunged into the world of Greek mythology when monsters attack him. His first meeting with these monsters is when Furies sent from Hades command him to return Zeus’ lightning bolt. Once his mother finds out, she sends him to the only safe place for demigods before she is dragged to the Underworld by the Minotaur. Here, he finds out that his true father is Poseidon, God of the Seas.

Unfortunately for Percy, 60 years ago there was a pact between The Big Three, Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades. Due to demigod children of these three Gods being too powerful for mortals, the pact was created to prevent them from ever having demigod children again, but Hades was the only god who did not break the pact. When Zeus’ lightning bolt is stolen, Zeus accuses Poseidon for stealing it with the help of Percy, and orders that he return it by the summer solstice. Poseidon, in turn, demands an apology for his accusation by the same date since he is innocent. To prevent a devastating civil war between the gods, Percy must now find which god is the true thief and return the lightning bolt to Zeus. By doing this, he can rescue his mother who is being held captive in the Underworld until the lightning bolt is returned.

In my opinion, this is a great book to start reading books by Rick Riordan. It is because of this book that I have now read every Rick Riordan series. It has a well-paced and well thought out plot. Very action packed, and excellent if you like mythology, or fantasy in general.

AMAZING!!!!! It is really nice. People who like fantasy, humor and adventure books should read this. I totally recommend this!!!!

I remember loving these books as a kid, and I even went to a book signing event with Rick Riordan for his last installment in the sequel following Percy Jackson and the Olympians. It's in this book where we are introduced to Percy Jackson himself, and find out he's a demigod. That means he's a descendant of one of the gods, and his happens to be Poseidon. This will cause further problems for him at his new camp, and send him on a quest to retrieve Zeus's missing lightning bolt after being accused of stealing it. Our first look into the world of the Greek gods is just the beginning of numerous thrilling installments.

Really, really, REALLY love this series! It's a bit slow when you start this book, but stick with it! I promise you wont be disappointed! This book is part of one of my favorite series of all time!

Did you know that Percy Jackson was inspired by Riordan’s oldest son? Haley, has ADHD and dyslexia. The author started telling him a bedtime story, and everything came from that. He needed a story that would tell him that it was okay, that seeing the world differently, processing information differently is okay, and can be a sign of strength.

I recently reread this book and it was just as good as I remembered. I love how Rick Riordan took dusty old Greek mythology and made it so contemporary. The book is feels so fresh and funny. It is fast-paced, with lots of action and excitement. Percy is a very likeable protagonist, although my favourite character is the clever Annabeth. Camp Half-Blood makes a great setting. It's just a purely enjoyable, fun read and will make you want to read all the sequels. Highly recommended.

The Lightning Thief is the first of Rick Riordan’s novels in the Percy Jackson series. Percy is a dyslexic and ADHD student who constantly gets in trouble at school, and has gotten expelled nearly every year. However, when he gets attacked by a monster during a field trip, he begins to realize the truth about him: his father is a Greek god. He is sent to Camp Half-Blood to learn to fight against monsters, and soon realizes that his father is Poseiden. Because of this, he is blamed by Zeus for stealing the master bolt, Zeus’s most deadly weapon. Percy, with his friends Grover and Annabeth, must go on a quest to confront the believed thief Hades and retrieve the bolt, knowing that failure means his death.

This is a fast-paced book with new adventures coming every moment. Percy is constantly confronted by monsters and gods, and he does not know who to trust. This constant element of surprise keeps the book very entertaining. Also, Riordan adds a lot of humour to these encounters, so the book cannot be considered dull at all. Riordan develops the characters of Percy’s friends very well, and we see many sides of them. For example, Grover wants desperately to help his friends, but feels like he is unable to do so. Adding these elements leads to a better story. This book is the first of a series of five, and it will keep you wanting to read more.

This is the first book in the Percy Jackson Series and it really sets a great tone for all the next books. It is interesting, comedic and easy to read. If you are a fan of greek mythology but don't want to read something heavy, this is the book for you. All the characters are very unique and interesting and the plot is so unpredictable it really makes the readers want more. Once you read the first book you keep on wanting more. I would definitely give this book a 5/5. @BookHoi127 of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library

The Lightning Thief is the first novel of an amazing series. It is action-packed, and the main character and narrator, Percy Jackson, gives a very funny and interesting take on Greek Mythology. I would recommend this book to ages 10+, and if you enjoy this book you should definitely continue to read Rick Riordan’s entire demigod collection, starting with the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. @teen_reader19 of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library

The book starts with a blast, it was a fast, exciting and creepy. After reading half the book it all went downhill from there. Once the mystery around the house was explored which was somewhat early. It became a very boring and almost absurd story, which I was not expecting at all. thought that it was different from other books that showed photos that were scattered throughout the book, I thought that concept was very interesting. It's also really well written with great creativity, but it lacked the same passed it had throughout the book. I would give this novel a rating of 2 stars. Only recommend to people who like fantasy. @Nando90 of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library

I saw a lot out there in the world, Percy. Didn’t you feel it—the darkness gathering, the monsters growing stronger? Didn’t you realize how useless it all is? All the heroics—being pawns of the gods. They should’ve been overthrown thousands of years ago, but they’ve hung on, thanks to us half-bloods.

Middle school student Percy Jackson fears getting expelled (AGAIN) when he destroys one of his teachers after she transforms into a Fury and tries to murder him. However, his troubles are only beginning. His best friend Grover reveals himself to be a satyr and tells Percy he is in mortal danger. Percy's mother, Sally, rushes Percy and Grover to the mysterious Camp Half-Blood but is attacked by a minotaur and disappears in a golden light. Percy kills the minotaur, but fears that his mother is dead. At Camp Half-Blood, Percy discovers that his favorite teacher is actually Chiron, the centaur who trained many Ancient Greek heroes. Percy and the other campers are all half-bloods- the children of a greek god or goddess and a mortal parent. After Percy is claimed by his father Poseidon, he sets out on a quest with Grover and Annabeth, a daughter of Athena, to locate Zeus's missing master bolt before Zeus and Poseidon (whom Zeus believes is the thief) go to war. Together they face off against Medusa, Echidna, the Furies, and even Ares, the god of war himself. After a visit with Hades helps Percy realize he's been set up by Ares, he finds the master bolt and must return it to Zeus before the Summer Solstice. If he's successful, not only will he prevent a war among the gods, but he may also save his mother, who is being held captive in the underworld. This is the first in a 5 book series about Percy and his friends.
