I had this book checked out for three months but couldn’t finish reading it. The concepts of morning pages and the artist’s date are brilliant (the first couple chapters). After that, the book becomes boring, rambling, and repetitive. It’s also very dated. I expected the 25th anniversary to reflect life in this millennium but the author is still talking about listening to records and the radio. She also suggests the tool of reading deprivation. Sadly, I don’t think that would be deprivation for most people these days. No mention of what truly blocks artists in modern times - the constant distractions and short attention spans we have developed thanks to the internet, smartphones, social media, Netflix, etc.

My suggestion for stuck artists: read the first few chapters, then return the book and check out “Bored and Brilliant “ and “Digital Minimalism”.

The Artist's Way is an excellent book for any artist who is feeling stuck.

The perfect way to gain success from this book is by working with a life coach or a psychologist.

They will motivate you to do the exercises and a psychologist especially will help you tackle the issues from a neuropathic way.

This book is SO good for artists. Tons of quotes from legends, and tons of motivation at such a DEEP level.

While some of the philosophy and religious ideas in this book can be off-putting, the underlying concepts and exercises can be quite helpful in discovery your creativity. And while written primarily for full-time professional artists, part-time amateur artist will also find it useful.

This book worked for me because I was willing to just suspend my disbelief and do what was asked of me by the program.

This is one of the many books recommended by NaNoWriMo & Camp NaNoWriMo.

It is incredible what gets uncovered in the exercises and morning pages. I suggest to ignore the labels ... "artist", "God", "creator"....they only mean whatever you infer into them.

Currently working through this with a group. We've struggled with the "God" and "Great Creator" language in the book. I think if you can replace these terms with whatever works for you (the Universe, the self, whatever) then you can get through it. I think, overall, the message is good and it has helped me with some things I've been working on. Not very far into the book (only on about week 3) but I see a lot of potential with it. The Morning Pages are incredibly helpful. I do recommend this for anyone feeling blocked or looking to be more creative.

I have been using this book for several years to spur me on. I do Morning Pages and Artists Dates now automatically. I set the book aside for a few months, then pick it back up and do the exercises again. It works well to keep me growing!

Recommended, looked at start, very good for unlocking creativity. On the long "for later" list.
