written directed and starring Norton. As usual, such vanity projects just don't work as well as if there were some restraint offered by team members. This could have been so much better.

This is a very good show, but, for a movie that comes off as a thriller, it clocks in way too long at nearly two-and-a-half hours. The villain of the piece, played by Alec Baldwin, is a version of real life Commissioner of Everything in NYC, Robert Moses. In fact, the writers did little to disguise that fact, naming the character Moses Randolph. His chief opponent, Gabby Horowitz, is a version of urban planning guru Jane Jacobs.

Best movie I have ever seen Norton do. He should have gotten an award.

What an amazingly excellent film. It is certainly better than some of the Oscar nominations. This movie is "Rainman" meets "Chinatown" with a little "Maltese Falcon" thrown in. Never since Dustin Hoffman played the autistic savant has an actor, Edward Norton, captured the essence of an neurological disorder so well!! He displays the tics and uncontrollable verbal symptoms in a totally believable fashion. There are also features of a savant in that Lionel Essrog never forgets what he has heard. As with "Chinatown" where J.J. Gittes ( Jack Nicholson ) is attempting to solve a problem with city government corruption involving the Los Angeles water supply, Lionel is following a systematic destruction of poor, especially black, neighborhoods in New York for real estate developments, bridges, and parks. Finally the setting has been placed in the post WWII 1950's and has the great noir feeling of films like "The Maltese Falcon". What is all the more amazing than the quality is that Edward Norton not only starred in the film, he produced, directed, and participated in the creation of the screenplay. I happily watched every minute and highly recommend this film!!! Kristi & Abby Tabby p.s. Great soundtrack!!!!

Absolutely must see movie. Edward Norton again proves to be most underrated talent in the modern cinematography - he wrote, produced, directed and starred in this incredible motion picture. He meticulously worked on this movie for almost 20 years, securing the rights since the day the original book was published in 1999.
The idea to set the action in NY fifties was brilliant, so was the portraying the Touerette syndrome and OCD's often accompanying this affliction. Acting was superb, as well as the soundtrack and New York of fifties scenery. A masterpiece on each level.

It was great to see Ed Norton take this period-perfect film noir story and make it one-of-a-kind. Watch for all the terrific stars and enjoy the detective/action plot. I look forward to more original movies like this one in the near future.

Enjoyed this movie very much. While it was long it still was a great acting job by Ed Norton. Reminded me of a good older style detective show.

If you like Edward norton you will love this. This is a story that is complex and longer than most films at 144 minutes. It is rich in details. It does remind me of the movie The Goldfinch, which is detail rich and complex. If you like that sort of movie that makes you think and feel, this it a goodie. It is based on some history of new york city and the housing crisis where people were taken advantage of with little recourse. It is
