Total Power is the newest installment in the Mitch Rapp series created by Vince Flynn, and the sixth book written by Kyle Mills who was asked to carry the mantle of the franchise after the death of Flynn. As is with the case with any of the books in the series, it is a stand alone book. First time readers or fans since book one alike will be able to read this on an even footing.

Thriller authors spend time thinking about what could be happening and relevant when their next book is released. The best writers seem to write books that end up mirroring the headlines. With Lethal Agent and now Total Power, Mills has brought the threats to America home to her shores, which in my opinion, amplifies the intensity of the plot and the urgency to "save the day".

In Total Power, perhaps the scariest book in the series, Mills tackles perhaps one of the least "sexy" or "flashy" topics imaginable, and yet one of the most critical to our every day life, namely the aging infrastructure of America's power supply and distribution networks. The books explores what would happen in the event of coordinated strikes that cripple the US power grids.

Most, if not all of us, have been inconvenienced by the localized loss of power. The clock on the microwave oven goes dark, and will have to be reset when power is restored. TV and electronic appliances can't function causing worry about spoilage in the refrigerator and freezer, heating/cooling of the dwelling, and above all, how to stay entertained in a world where we constantly seek electronics to fill our time. For most this is a relatively short inconvenience. Candles and flashlights may be required for brief interludes. In the cases of strong storms, the outages may be broader and take days or weeks before power is restored. Through the ordeal we maintain faith that the power will be restored and life will continue.

What if the grids across the country all were sabotaged? What then? What would people do when the power didn't return? What would happen when water treatment and sewage plants remained offline? What happens when the alternate power generators at hospitals and other facilities run out of fuel and they also go dark? What happens when gasoline can no longer be pumped to our cars, or to the trucks that haul the equipment needed to fix the problems? If this sounds like 2020, it may not be too far from the truth. This year has shown us how quickly law and order can be overrun by angry mobs, and communities and cities ravaged as looters seek necessities for maintaining life.

Mills delivers the goods with Total Power. We find an evolving Mitch Rapp adjusting to a stronger domestic life with people he loves and cares for. His humanity is being restored and is resurfacing.

This is a book that will entertain and frighten readers. It is a great vehicle to remind us about the potential dangers of not updating the infrastructure that supports our society. It is not a political statement in support or against one party or the other. It could be viewed as a call to action for those in power, whatever political ideologies they cling to.

This is a book that will be remembered as one of the top 5 to top 10 novels in the Thriller genre for 2020.
