Scott has been a case of arrested development ever since his firefighter father died when he was seven. He's now reached his mid-20s having achieved little, living with his mother, spending his days smoking weed, hanging with the guys, and secretly hooking up with his girlfriend Kelsey. But when his mother starts dating a loudmouth firefighter named Ray, it sets off a chain of events that will force Scott to grapple with his grief and take his first tentative steps toward moving forward in life.

I don't understand the disconnect for other viewers. I'm 40 and I have taken a few film classes so I'm picky about film content. I loved this movie so much I watched it 3 times already on HBO. I loved the music, got the jokes! The writing and acting is spot on for the feel that they are presenting. Yes it is cringing at times to see how Petes life unfolds and yes it has a bit of a softball happy ending. Bel Poley is sharp and takes no $%^& Why else do we watch films? It's funny, realistic and the actors have great chemistry. Apatow is a genx/millienial film genious.

Not sure why this was on my list of holds. Nothing redeeming here.

Before watching this movie...I had only seen Pete Davidson on television roasts of other famous people. I thought he was a very weird duck. I enjoyed this movie. Some of the scenes were rather sad. It explained a few things of how the character grew up.

Ish!! A sorry, common tale with a sappy, happy ending. Dumb, really, and dialog that consists primarily of the word F**king. I mean, every single sentence is peppered with this. It's not that it offends me, it's just that it adds absolutely nothing to the story or the characters and often it seems "acted" . . . like the feeling isn't there. Actually, that's an overall critique if I might be so bold: the feeling isn't there. Marissa Tomei is gorgeous!! That's the best part . . . watching her.

Is King of Staten Island a true story?
"Pete Davidson brings his real story to life with director Judd Apatow in new film 'The King of Staten Island' Director Judd Apatow leads Pete Davidson in a film inspired by the comedian's real-life inspired, 'The King of Staten Island'. ... In real life, Pete's dad was a firefighter who died on 9/11. " June 14, 2020

Critic reviews
- You’ll want to give Pete Davidson a hug after watching his revealing new comedy "The King of Staten Island." Johnny Oleksinski - New York Post

- The King of Staten Island is funny and authentic and painful and problematic and offensive. Adam Holz - Plugged In

- Tackling some of Davidson's real-life troubles, this touching, hilarious dramedy is long but breezy, weighty but easy, with an excellent lead performance and a great group of characters. Jeffrey M. Anderson - Common Sense Media

- The content can be raw, sometimes startling, but before and after everything else the film is hilarious. Joe Morgenstern - Wall Street Journal

- "The King of Staten Island" works perfectly as the story of a screwup, not so well when it's bending over backwards for you to feel good about him. Owen Gleiberman - Variety

I starting watching this movie about 5 days ago. Even today, I have to try to remember just what it's about. Yes, I remember now. If you have to work at it, well...

Once upon an era, there were "teen movie" dramas, with the likes of now mostly-unknown stars such as Troy Donahue, Connie Stevens and Pat Boone. Some of these (April Love) made almost as much noise when first released as King of Staten Island. Will this movie be as forgotten in 50 years as Parrish and Susan Slade? How about ... ten years from now?

Difference: the forces that drive the stay-at-home slacker character is internal, not, as in the oldies movies, external.

This is a "teen movie," 21st century style. Subtitle: Father Dies, Kid Fights Depression. Today, it's all about PTSD, it seems, not teenage pregnancy, romantic entanglements or domestic abuse, all yesterday's preoccupations.

Starring young unknowns, the movie provokes these questions: Is it a drama? Pretty lightweight, if it is. No deadly menace here. Is it a comedy? (A few chuckles, nothing much more.). Kudos for garnering notoriety in the year of Covid. Very few movies have achieved this. That enough for you? Not enough for me. Pulled the DVD 30 minutes in.

A clever, heartwarming story with endearing characters. I could watch it again.

Now available at Redbox for two bucks! I found this movie highly entertaining and cleverly original. Likable (mostly) characters and good funny story.
