Beset with increasingly debilitating headaches, fledgling author David Martín learns from his physician that he suffers from a brain tumor and the prognosis isn't promising. Soon after, he is approached by a mysterious stranger who offers him a large sum of money and a clean bill of health in exchange for writing an influential religious book. David agrees, though the further he becomes entangled in his boss' wishes, the greater his misgivings. Zafón's first book in this series, 'The Shadow of the Wind,' was breathtaking. This one? Not so much. The writing is still beautiful, but the story itself was not nearly as engrossing as I was expecting. It sounds like quality picks up again with book 3, and I'm looking forward to it.
