Vermilion

the Adventures of Lou Merriwether, Psychopomp

The start was so promising, but it was a train wreck by the end. There were so many unnecessary elements like talking animals popping up once or twice, homosexual characters (a few is fine, but nearly everyone is LGBTQ in this book, which seems very forced; sexual preference added very little to the characters and nothing to the plot), characters that help once and are never heard from again, and the mention of dragons we never get to see. Then there's the ending; that is TOO loose of an ending. Also, I'm surprised so many grammatical errors made it into the final copy. It's a shame. Could've been great if it stuck to what was promised on the back instead of wistfully going off on so many tangents. Nevertheless this writing shows promise. It IS a debut novel. I'd be interested in seeing how the author has improved since Vermilion.
